Week 2 Rewind
Thoughts on the biggest stories in second week of football in the Big Country, presented by Abilene Pediatric Dental Associates.
OFF THE TOP
Cooper came out ready to play, but Abilene High proved to be too much and pulled away to win the Crosstown Showdown for the fourth year in a row.
Stephenville opened its new stadium in fashion, taking care of Everman 45-0 to win game one at Art Briles Stadium/Mike Copeland Field.
Brownwood dropped to 0-2, falling to 3A D2 state title contender Wall. There is still a learning curve for a new system under new head coach Jeryl Brixey, and the Lions have had a tough time on offense through two weeks. Brownwood gained just 169 yards against Wall and 92 against Wylie in week one.
In 4A Division II, Sndyer and Graham had a tough time in losses to San Angelo Lake View and Springtown. The Tigers drop to 0-2, while the Steers, who were limited to a very un-Graham-like seven points and 262 yards of total offense, fell to 1-1.
Jim Ned and Clyde are the last two unbeaten teams in the area in 3A Division I. The Indians won a slugfest with Cedar Hill TLCA in Mineral Wells, while Clyde blasted past Eastland. Sweetwater fell to Midland Greenwood at home, while Comanche and Breckenridge fell to 0-2. The Buckaroos played much better this week at Childress, but came up short in a 21-14 decision.
Speaking of Sweetwater, check ou the Big Country Blitz story on the amazing Cash Miles here: Dash For Cash. He is a blind senior at Sweetwater who got his moment at the Mustang Bowl before the action started Friday night. Shout out to the Sweewater and Greenwood coaching staffs for making this happen!
In area 3A D2 football, Brady had a big-time win, taking down Mason on the road in a 24-22 nailbiter.
Merkel is now 2-0 after going 0-10 a year ago. The Badgers also won a close one, slipping past Bangs at home 29-26. They have their toughest test of the season so far coming up against Hawley Friday night.
Stamford proved the pickers (me) wrong and used a great second half effort to beat De Leon in a battle of state-ranked 2A DI teams. The Bulldogs trailed 20-14 at halftime, but did not allow a point in the second half and earned a 33-20 victory. The Bearcats and Bulldogs just may meet again down the road in the playoffs.
Anson rolled past Archer City to move to 2-0. The Tigers have scored a Big Country 11-man high 106 points so far this season and are tied with Hamilton, having allowed an area low six points.
Munday is 2-0 for the second year in a row. The Moguls rolled past Winters and will host 1-1 Chico this week. Munday hopes to get to 3-0 for the second year in a row and then keep momentum rolling.
Haskell lost in upset fashion at Quanah Friday night. Quanah is now 2-0 and has equalled its win total from 2024 already.

Albany’s revenge tour rolls on. The Lions fell to Stamford and Hawley to kick off the 2024 season, but have beaten them 21-7 in week one and week two of the 2025 season to start 2-0.
Hamlin, Cross Plains, Miles, and Goldthwaite are in the win column in 2025. The Pied Pipers rallied past Seymour, the Buffaloes blew out TLCA Abilene, Miles shut out Sterling City and the Eagles shut out Center Point. All three played much better than they did in week one defeats.
Westbrook may have had the most impressive 1A Division I win of the week. The Wildcats continued their domination of Jonesboro, this time beating the Eagles 64-16 on the road to get to 2-0.
Hermleigh and Water Valley have a shot to meet in the bi-district round (or later) of the playoffs, and the Cardinals now know how much work needs to be done to get on the Wildcats level. Water Valley, ranked #3 in the state, 45’d Hermleigh to improve to 2-0.
Robert Lee was quite impressive as well in a 62-14 win over Garden City. The Steers held the Bearkats to -25 yards rushing and just 97 total yards in the game.
#1 Gordon had no trouble at Valley, beating the Patriots 62-14 to run their winning streak to 32 games.
The upset of the week may have been in Richland Springs, as the Coyotes took down May 42-14. Richland Springs winning this contest was not a shocker, but the score certainly was to me after the Tigers moved up to #2 in the state rankings last week.
Bronte is 2-0 and on a roll so far with a pair of shut out wins over Santa Anna and Rule.
Jayton took down Pasadena First Baptist Saturday as the two teams, both state champs in 2024, met in Central Texas. The game was scheduled to be played at Oglesby, but rainy conditions moved the contest to McGregor. The location didn’t matter to Jayton, who cruised to a 54-8 decision over the defending TAPPS DI state champions.
Strawn looks like the class of District 9-1A Division II after taking care of Knox City on the road. The other three teams in the district, Moran, Woodson, and Throckmorton, are a combined 0-6 so far.
Zephyr joins Bronte and Newcastle as the only area six-man teams that have not allowed a point so far this season. The Bulldogs shut down Blackwell 45-0 on the road and are cooking in year one under head coach Derek Stevens. Gustine and Rising Star are also still perfect so far in 2025, and Blanket and Sidney are 1-1 in the very tough District 13-1A Division II.
Abilene Christian had no trouble with Midland Trinity, shutting out the Chargers 49-0 to get its first win of the season.
FIRST WINS
Congratulations to Gorman’s Brady Hibbitts, Ira’s Jess Wall, Cross Plains’ Jared Sanderson, and Ballinger’s Bryan Gayoso for earning win number one their school. Wall and Gayoso earned win number one as a head coach.
Our prayers go out to Coach Gayoso and family as his mother passed away on Saturday.

THE UNDEFEATED - WEEK 2
The list of unbeaten Big Country teams is cut from 39 to 22 after week two.
The two I’m most surprised about being on the list? Probably Panther Creek and Ranger. The Panthers have seemingly turned things around after a winless 2024 season, while Ranger is 2-0 under new head coach Mark Thomas. Granted, the first victory was by forfeit, but the Bulldogs have already matched their 2024 win total two games into the season.
21 in the extended Big Country area, including every team in every area district, are left, down from 36.
