Southwestern Ruins War Hawks Season Opener, 27-19 + Photos
ABILENE, Texas — Southwestern recovered a fumble in the end zone on the second play of the game and never trailed in a 27-19 victory at McMurry.
The War Hawks were playing their first game on the new maroon and gray field turf at Wilford Moore Stadium.
The Pirates led 17-3 by the end of the first quarter, but McMurry pulled within 17-11 in the second quarter on a Drelon Burton nine-yard touchdown run.
Southwestern quickly answered with a touchdown of their own and led 24-11 at the half.
McMurry rallied, but turned the ball over on downs on their final drive with under two minutes to go.
McMurry outgained Southwestern 413 to 232 on the night, but two turnovers and 12 penalties for 94 yards hurt their chances.
Jess Hoel threw for 324 yards and a touchdown, finding his top target Thomas Chandler 11 times for 115 yards.
Abilene High grad Bryce Neves led the War Hawks with seven tackles.
McMurry will travel to the north side of Abilene to battle rival Hardin-Simmons next Saturday at 6 p.m.
