Week 5 Rewind

Thoughts on the biggest stories in fifth week of football in the Big Country, presented by BMY CPA in Stephenville.

BEST WINS OF THE WEEK

11-MAN

5: Stephenville — The Yellow Jackets took down state-ranked La Vega in dominant fashion at home 64-28 to improve to 5-0

4: Breckenridge — Tolar may be a bit down this season, but a win on the road for the Buckaroos is still huge. Breckenridge lost this matchup 42-6 last season and now has topped their win total from all of 2024 with two wins so far in 2025.

3: Jim Ned — The Indians exploded for 48 points in a big road win at state-ranked Holliday, 48-20. Jim Ned had put just 46 points on the board over the previous three weeks against Cedar Hill TLCA, Wall, and Jacksboro and beat that mark in one game to improve to 4-1.

2: Anson — The Tigers beat the Lions 20-6 for the first time since 2001, holding Albany under 100 yards of total offense (81 according to Albany’s stats, 68 according to Anson’s stats, and 73 according to Big Country Preps). Anson moves to 5-0 with their most impressive win of the season to date.

1: Cooper — The Cougars opened district play in style, taking down previously unbeaten and 10th-ranked Wichita Falls Memorial behind an amazing effort on the ground. Cooper ran for 357 yards and did a great job of playing keep-away to get past the Mavericks 42-27.

Honorable Mention:
San Saba 17, Hamilton 14 - The Dillos earn a big time win on the road at a team that was a state semifinalist a year ago.

Brownwood 20, China Spring 10 - It was a happy homecoming for the Lions, who won a defensive battle over the Cougars.

Ballinger 21, Stanton 17 - Any time you can beat a team from a bigger class on the road, you’ll take it.

6-MAN

5: Paint Creek — The Pirates took down the Panthers 54-7 to win the “Battle of the Creek” and improve to 4-1 on the season.

4: Rising Star — The Wildcats have played some tough 1A D1 opponents this season, but Gorman was the first one they beat in a 46-36 decision.

3: Robert Lee — The Steers played their toughest game of the season to date and didn’t have much trouble, taking care of Sands 82-46.

2: Jayton — The top-ranked Jaybirds flexed their muscle once again, shutting out a very good Hermleigh team 58-0 to get to 5-0 on the season.

1: Strawn — The Greyhounds knocked Zephyr from the ranks of the undefeated in an 86-38 decision to improve to 4-1.

Honorable Mention:

Roby 58, Baird 12 - The Lions are now 4-1 and avenged an embarrassing 64-0 loss to the Bears in 2024.

Abilene XOT 27, Olfen 25 - The first-ever varsity game for this new six-man squad was a win over Olfen.

THE UNDEFEATED - WEEK 5

The list of unbeaten Big Country teams is cut down to eight after five weeks of action as Zephyr was the only unbeaten team to lose.

In the Big Country... And Beyond we have six 11-man teams and six 6-man teams left that have not lost. Wichita Falls Memorial and Oglesby fell from the ranks of the unbeaten in week five.
