TOP FIVE 11-MAN GAMES OF THE WEEK

WF Memorial leads series 1-0
Last meeting: Memorial 24, Cooper 7 in 2024

The Cougars come in with some momentum after crushing Coronado 59-0 last week, and they’ll need it against the unbeaten and 10th-ranked Mavericks in the District 2-5A Division Two opener for both teams. Memorial beat Andrews 70-20 last Friday, and their most impressive win was a 33-26 decision over 6A Frenship in week two. Cooper has a tough stretch to open district against the other four top playoff contenders, and a win here would be a huge shot in the arm. I expect the Coogs to keep it close, but the Mavericks are the Blitz Pick to win it.

THE SPREAD: Wichita Falls Memorial by 8
THE PICK: Wichita Falls Memorial

Muenster leads series 2-1
Last meeting: Muenster 50, De Leon 21 in 2024

Number four this week is De Leon at Muenster in a battle of state ranked squads. The Bearcats check in at number eight this week in 2A Division I, while the defending 2A Division two state champion Hornets check in at number two in D-2 despite a 2-2 record. However, those losses were to 3A D1 Pottsboro last week and 3A D2 Holliday in week two. De Leon passed a test with a win over Hawley last Friday, but a win at Muenster, who won this matchup 50-21 last season, will be tougher to get. Muenster is the Blitz Pick in this one.

Jim Ned leads series 2-1
Last meeting: Jim Ned 17, Holliday 15 in 2024

The third best game on the schedule in the Big Country this week is Jim Ned at Holliday. The Indians won at Jacksboro last week and head north again, this time to tangle with the Eagles, who are 4-0 and ranked at six in the latest 3A Division II state poll. Holliday has scored a lot of points so far this season, but, other than a week one shut out of Breckenridge, have given up a lot as well. The Jim Ned offense hasn’t exactly been rolling so far this year, but their defense is as tough as ever. I’m going with the Indians to find a way to get the job done and pull off the upset as four point underdogs according to Pigskin Prep.

THE SPREAD: Holliday by 4
THE PICK: Jim Ned

La Vega leads series 8-7
Last meeting: Stephenville 38, La Vega 28 in 2024

At number two we have another battle of ranked squads as Stephenville hosts Waco La Vega. The Yellow Jackets are holding strong at number four in 4A Division I, while La Vega, fresh off a 38-16 win over Brownwood, is at number five in 4A Division II. Stephenville rolled past 5A Wylie last week and is a 12 point favorite in this one. The pick is for Stephenville to move to 5-0.

Albay leads series 48-26-3
Last meeting: Albany 27, Anson 17 in 2024

And the top game in the Big Country this week is Albany at Anson. The Tigers are 4-0 and lead the Big Country in points per game with 45.8 and in the fewest points allowed per game at just 3.5. Albany will be their toughest test to date, and the Lions are battle tested having beaten Stamford, Hawley, and Seymour and coming up just short against 3A Coahoma last week. I see this one as a coin flip and a game that goes down to the wire. Albany is the pick to end up with close victory on the road.

THE PICK: Albany

TOP FIVE 6-MAN GAMES OF THE WEEK

Gordon leads series 1-0
Last meeting: Gordon 56, FWCC 0 in 2024

The week five slate in Big Country sixman high school football is not exactly the best one of the season, but five games are certainly worth highlighting — starting with Gordon at Fort Worth Covenant Classical.

Do I expect it to be close? No, especially after seeing what the Longhorns did in the 11-man ranks to Thorndale last week. But the Cavaliers are one of the top sixman private school programs in the state and will be ready to give Gordon all it can handle. With all their weapons, the Longhorns are the Blitz pick to extend their winning streak to 35 in a row in Fort Worth this week.

THE PICK: Gordon

Jayton leads series 8-4
Last meeting: Jayton 68, Hermleigh 22 in 2024

At number four it’s an intruguing matchup as Hermleigh heads to Jayton. The Cardinals only loss this season was to 1A division one second-ranked Water Valley, and now they get another great test at defending state champ and number one ranked in division two Jayton. The Jaybirds have not been tested so far this season, but Hermleigh has the weapons that could make this a competitive affair. However, Jayton won this matchup 68-22 a year ago and the Jaybirds are the Blitz pick to get the job done again in 2025.

Panther Creek leads series 3-1
Last meeting: Panther Creek 12, Paint Creek 0 in 2024

The third best game on the schedule this week in the Big Country sixman ranks is the battle for the creek as Panther Creek visits Paint Creek. The Pirates are at 3-1 entering week five for the second year in a row after taking down Harrold last week, but the Panthers are one of the bigger early season surprises so far their 3-1 mark. Panther Creek is back after going winless in 2024, and they will be tested by Marcus Gonzales, Chris Wesley and the Pirates Friday night. Paint Creek is the pick to move to 4-1 in this one.

THE PICK: Paint Creek

Robert Lee leads series 6-1-2
Last meeting: Robert Lee 78, Sands 74 in 2024

At number two, it’s Sands at Robert Lee. The Mustangs opened the season with a loss at Hermleigh, but have beaten O’Donnell, Garden City, and Loraine over the past three weeks to get to 3-1. They are the number five ranked team in the state in 1A division two according to sixman football dot com. Robert Lee is rated third in division one by that same website, and the Steers have cruised to four mercy rule wins. This one may not end up being a 45, but Robert Lee is the pick to win it and stay perfect this season.

Strawn leads series 6-2
Last meeting: Strawn 84, Zephyr 42 in 2024

Our top sixman game this week is a matchup of two great 1A division two teams as unbeaten Zephyr heads to 8th ranked Strawn. The only loss between the two teams is Strawn falling to rival Gordon, but they bounced back with an easy win over Bryson last week. The Greyhounds took care of the Bulldogs 84-42 on the road in this matchup last season. I expect this one to be closer, but Strawn is the pick to earn a big win.

#12 ACU (2-2) AT INCARNATE WORD (1-3) - SATURDAY, 6 P.M.

ACU leads series 7-5
Last meeting: UIW 27, ACU 20 in 2023

Another week, another test for the Wildcats.

ACU is back out of conference play this week as they visit Incarnate Word in San Antonio. The Cardinals just fell out of the Top 25 this week, thanks to a 1-3 record and a 31-23 loss at Northern Arizona.

UIW, the preseason pick to win the Southland Conference this season, was number five in the preseason poll.

The Wildcats have been very good at home this season, but haven’t really had an equal playing field on the road so far with losses to FBS Tulsa and TCU.

THE PICK: ACU

HOWARD PAYNE (2-1) AT MCMURRY (0-3) - SATURDAY, 2 P.M.

HPU leads series 50-30-2
Last Meeting: McMurry 45, HPU 21 in 2023

The War Hawks are still in search of their first victory of the season as old rival Howard Payne makes the road trip from Brownwood to Abilene this weekend.

McMurry is coming off a last second loss in Alabama at Huntingdon College last week, while the Yellow Jackets fell to NAIA Wayland Baptist in a 21-18 head-scratcher at home to lose for the first time under new head coach Coby Gipson.

THE PICK: McMurry

KILGORE (1-2, 0-2) AT CISCO COLLEGE (1-1, 0-1) - SATURDAY, 3 P.M.

Cisco came up short on the road at Trinity Valley last week, 21-16, and will get Kilgore for its first SWJCFC home game Saturday afternoon.

Kilgore was the preseason pick by the media to win the conference, but the Bulldogs are off to an 0-2 start with losses to NMMI (36-22) and Navarro (53-10)

THE PICK: Cisco College
