OFF THE TOP

Cooper was the only one of the “Big Three” in Abilene to pick up a win, as the Cougars dominated Lubbock Coronado 59-0. The last two weeks have been nightmare fuel for the Mustangs, who lost 70-14 at Wylie the week before. Abilene High had a 28-21 lead at the half against Midland Legacy, but did not score again in a 42-28 loss. Wylie ran into a buzzsaw at Stephenville, who rolled past the Bulldogs 52-13 to move to 4-0 on the season. All three Abilene schools begin district play next week.

Comanche got one of the better wins of the week, topping Tolar 36-33 to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Breckenridge got into the win column in a big way, blowing out Eastland 35-6 to get victory number one of 2025.

Clyde and Jim Ned also got key wins out of District 3-3A Division I. The Bulldogs were impressive in a 49-7 win at 4A Sndyer, while the Inidans rallied from a 7-3 halftime deficit to beat Jacksboro on the road 23-13.

Merkel had it’s way with Cross Plains 66-6 to improve its record to 3-1 on the year. The Badgers have a very good shot at being 5-1 heading into district play with TLCA San Angelo (0-3) and Brownfield (0-4) coming up on the schedule the next two weeks.

Anson moved to 4-0 with a 26-8 win at Haskell. This one was much closer than the Tigers previous three games this year, but their defense was top-notch once again and forced five turnovers.

Bangs put it on TLCA Abilene 71-0 to even it’s record at 2-2. The Dragons have beaten the Eagles 71-0 and 71-6 the past two seasons.

De Leon earned a big-time win over Hawley at home, 52-34. De Leon, back in the state rankings this week, avenged a loss to Hawley a year ago and now looks forward to a showdown at defending 2A Division II state champ Muenster.

Hamlin rolled past Munday 48-14, knocking the Moguls from the ranks of the undefeated. The Pied Pipers and Moguls are now both 3-1.

Albany is 3-1 as well after falling at home against 4-0 Coahoma 15-12. The Lions played up two classes and gave the Bulldogs all they could handle before falling in the end.

One of the biggest stories of the week was Gordon playing its first of two 11-man games against Thorndale. The Longhorns passed that test in a big way, rolling past the Bulldogs 54-21 to extend their state best winning streak to 34-games. Thorndale kept it close early, but Gordon outscored them 26-7 in the third quarter to pull away. They’ll head back to six-man action next week at Fort Worth Covenant Classical, one of the best TAPPS teams in the state.

May bounced back from a somewhat surprising 28-point loss at Richland Springs two weeks ago with a 60-42 home win over previously unbeaten Newcastle. The Tigers now have two top-ten wins on their resume.

Ira opened its beautiful new sports complex in style as the Bulldogs blasted O’Donnell 60-14.

Blanket continues to cruise so far in 2025, bouncing back from a season opening loss at 1A DI Menard with three straight mercy-rule wins. The latest, a 68-0 shut out win at Santa Anna. They still are looking up in the non-district standings at Zephyr at the moment. The Bulldogs blasted Lingleville 64-0 and will be tested in a big way next week at state ranked Strawn.

Trent is also now 3-1 on the season. The Gorillas fell in week one to Rotan, but have wins over Wilson, Priddy, and Rule the past three weeks. Trent outlasted Rule 75-52 on Thursday.

Aspermont, Jayton, and Paint Creek keep winning in District 8-1A Division II. The defending state champion Jaybirds shut out Knox City 56-0, while the Hornets rolled past Woodson 52-6 and the Pirates outlasted Harrold 65-44.

Abilene Christian passed another big test, defending the home field to take down previously unbeaten Lubbock Kingdom Prep 52-32. The Panthers only loss so far this season was by three in week one at Jonesboro.
