TOP FIVE 11-MAN GAMES OF THE WEEK

Hamlin leads series 19-11-1

Last meeting: Hamlin 39, Munday 0 in 2024

The Moguls are 3-0 to start the season for the second in a row, while Hamlin is coming off a hard fought win at Crosbyton to get to 2-1 on the season. The Pied Pipers shut out Munday 39-0 last season, and this will be a great measuring stick for the Moguls to see how far they’ve come. I think they are much improved this season, but the Pipers are the pick to send the homecoming crowd home happy on Friday night.

THE SPREAD: Hamlin by 11
THE PICK: Hamlin

Series tied 46-46-1
Last meeting: Anson 51, Haskell 13 in 2024

Number four is another good 2A matchup in the Northern Big Country as Anson heads to Haskell. This will be the 95th matchup in the series, which is remarkably tied 46-46 and one dating back to 1917. Anson has won the last two, including a 51-13 victory a year ago. The Tigers have been just about the hottest team in the area to start the season, leading the big country in scoring at 52.3 points per game and also giving up the fewest points per game at two. Haskell is coming off an unexpected bye week and a forfeit win over TLCA Abilene. The Indians seem to be playing better ball so far in 2025, but Anson, even without injured starting QB Grayson Feagan, is the pick to get the job done on the road.

THE SPREAD: Anson by 26
THE PICK: Anson

Stephenville leads series 9-4
Last meeting: Stephenville 49, Wylie 27 in 2024

Number three on the list this week is Wylie at Stephenville. The Bulldogs blew out Coronado 70-14 last week and will get a much tougher test against the unbeaten and 4th ranked Yellow Jackets. Stephenville handled Wylie 49-27 on the road a year ago and will now be the host for just the second time in their brand new Art Briles Stadium. Wylie should be able to keep it close, but the Yellow Jackets are the pick to earn the win.

THE PICK: Stephenville

First meeting in series

Number two is a battle of unbeatens in Albany as the 2A Division 2 Lions host 3A Division 2 Coahoma. These two will be meeting for the first time ever. The Bulldogs have wins over Forsan, Roscoe, and Kermit by a combined 125 to 11. Albany has certainly played the tougher schedule, picking up wins over Stamford, Hawley and Seymour to kick off the year. The Bulldogs have some size and great weapons and I wouldn’t be surprised if they picked up a win, but Albany is the choice to defend the home field and move to 4-0 on the season.

THE PICK: Albany

Hawley leads series 2-1
Last meeting: Hawley 54, De Leon 21 in 2024

Finally, our top game in the Big Country this week is Hawley at De Leon. The Bearcat offense came alive in a 51-34 victory at Merkel last week, while the Bearcats put plenty of points on the board as well in a 41-21 win at Valley Mills. Hawley will have its hands full with the De Leon offense, but the Bearcat defense will also have to step up against Camden Ables and company. I give De Leon the edge by the slimmest of margins in this one, and the Bearcats are the pick to avenge a 54-21 loss to Hawley last season.

TOP FIVE 6-MAN GAMES OF THE WEEK

First meeting in series

Week four is another one full of great Sixman matchups across the Big Country, including where we start with a game I’m not exactly sure how to classify as Gordon plays 11-man ball this week at Thorndale. The Longhorns will put their 33 game winning streak on the line this week when they the three hour trip to central Texas to take on the 2A Division I Bulldogs. Thorndale is 2-1 on the season and is coming off an 8-4 2024 season that saw them fall in the second round of the playoffs to Refugio. Gordon handled Itasca in an 11-man scrimmage in the preseason, but Thorndale is a much better opponent. The Bulldogs may end up earning the win, but it’s hard to pick against the athletes that Gordon has. I’m going with Gordon.

THE PICK: Gordon

Paint Creek leads series 6-5
Last meeting: Harrold 46, Paint Creek 6 in 2023

With that bonus game out of the way, we start our top five sixman only games with Harrold at Paint Creek. Both teams bring 2-1 records to the contest. The Pirates have won two in a row after a season opening loss to Gustine, while the Hornets started 2-0 but lost their last time out to Northside. I’m going with the home team in this one, and picking Paint Creek to get the win.

Rising Star leads series 1-0
Rising Star 32, Hermleigh 14 in 1948

Number four is Hermleigh at Rising Star. The Wildcats proved themselves to be one of the most improved teams in the area even in a loss last week at 1A Division I Perrin-Whitt. They’ll be tested even more by the Cardinals this week, who took care of Loraine 51-6 last Friday night to improve to 2-1. Hermleigh is the choice to win on the road at Rising Star.

Series tied 14-14-1
Last meeting: Menard 47, Bronte 18 in 2024

At three it’s Bronte at Menard in a battle of unbeaten teams. The Longhorns have surprised some folks with their 3-0 start, but the Divison I Yellow Jackets will be their toughest test so far. Bronte has only given up eight points through three weeks, but that will change against a Menard squad this is averaging 63 points per game. Menard is the pick to stay perfect in this one.

Abilene Christian leads series 4-2
Last meeting: ACS 22, Lubbock Kingdom Prep 21 in 2024

Number two, we take a closer look at Abilene Christian as the Panthers host Lubbock Kingdom Prep. These two teams have had some great battles over the past few years, including a one-point 22-21 ACS victory in 2024. Pierson Walters and the Panther offense has been hard to stop this season, but the Knights average over 61 points per game themselves. This could be a shootout, and the Panthers are the pick to come out on top.

May leads series 8-5
Last meeting: May 72, Newcastle 22 in 2024

Our top sixman game in the Big Country this week is Newcastle at May. Heck, it’s probably even the top sixman game in the state. Newcastle has yet to allow a point this year and is ranked number eight in the state, while the Tigers are 2-1 and check in at number three. May has played the tougher competition thus far, beating Whiteface and Rochelle and falling to Richland Springs, but the pick is for the Bobcats to keep things rolling and get a little revenge from a 72-22 home loss to the Tigers last season.
