Week 6 Rewind

Thoughts on the biggest stories in the sixth week of football in the Big Country.

BEST WINS OF THE WEEK

11-MAN

5: Brownwood — The Lions put it all together in a dominating 62-0 win over Ingleside Friday night at Smithson Valley. Brownwood had only scored 80 points all season before exploding for 62 and evening its record at 3-3.

4: Haskell — The Indians turned it on offensively and did just enough on defense to top Seymour 54-36. Haskell evens its district mark at 1-1 to give its playoff hopes a big shot in the arm.

3: Wylie — The Bulldogs looked like they may be in trouble when Cooper took a 22-15 lead in the second quarter. The Cougar rushing attack looked unstoppable, but the Bulldogs managed to tie it up by the half and made the right halftime adjustments to stop Cooper enough to get the 29-22 win. Wylie is the only 2-0 team in 2-5A Division II after two weeks of action.

2: Abilene High — The Eagles rallied from a 21-0 first-half deficit and a 21-7 halftime deficit to take down Amarillo High 24-21. The Warbirds join Tascosa as the only two 2-0 teams in District 2-5A Division I play after two weeks.

1: Stephenville — This one is by a large margin, as the Yellow Jackets turned in one of the better performances of the season in knocking off previously unbeaten Ruston, Louisiana 28-12. Stephenville beat a Ruston squad that had wins over 5A Longview 38-35 and 6A Midland Legacy 49-21 over the previous two weeks. The Jackets staked an even bigger claim as one of the teams to beat in 4A Division I this season.

Honorable Mention:
Merkel 47, Brownfield 14: The Badgers beat up on a winless Cub squad, but a win is a win and Merkel is now 5-1 after going 0-10 in 2024. Things will get much tougher, however, next week in the district opener at Wall.

6-MAN

5: Throckmorton — The Greyhounds took down Crowell 41-14 to not only get win number one of the season but also win number one for head coach Tommy Sugg as head man in Throckmorton.

4: Blackwell — The Hornets finally get in the win column in 2025. Blackwell shut out Panther Creek 58-0 to make it a happy homecoming for Hornet fans.

3: Paint Creek — The Pirates are now 5-1 on the season after knocking Chillicothe from the ranks of the unbeaten in a 70-31 decision on the road.

2: Jayton — The Jaybirds went on the road to 1A DI state-ranked Newcastle and came away with another impressive victory, 61-15.

1: Benjamin — The Mustangs had two weeks off prior to facing state-ranked Cherokee, and they came to play when they finally got the chance. Benjamin crushed Cherokee 68-6 and firmly looks like the top challenger to Jayton in 1A Division II Region II.
