Educated Guesses: 3A Division II

Kickoff to the 2025 season is getting closer and closer, and the time has come to take a stab at how things will play out in each district featuring Big Country football teams.

I call them educated guesses, like your teachers used to, because I feel I have at least a little bit of knowledge about the upcoming season after speaking with area coaches for the 2025 edition of Big Country Blitz.

For the record, last season Big Country Blitz got five out of eight playoff picks correct in 3A DII.

Wall is the heavy favorite here, checking in at #3 in the 3A DII preseason poll and coming off a year in which they won their four district games by over 46 points per game.

Coahoma, Staton, and Grape Creek were playoff teams a year ago and will try to hold off Merkel, coming off an 0-10 year, to make it back.

Coahoma gets back quarterback Boyd Cox, who put up big numbers a year ago. Grape Creek welcomes back 11 starters, while Stanton has just seven.

The Badgers, very young in 2024, should be improved this year and poised to battle for a trip to the playoffs.

Tolar took the district championship a year ago and is the favorite to win again, but don’t count out Brady.

The Bulldogs beat everyone but Tolar last season and have seven starters back on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Sean Jacoby, running back Ashton Taylor, and three returning all-district offensive linemen should give the Bulldogs a great shot at putting a lot of points on the board.

The Rattlers will be younger this season, returning four starters on offense and four more on defense.

Beyond Tolar and Brady, the last two district playoff spots could be a crapshoot.

Clifton looks to have an edge on the field with 11 returning starters.

Dublin was a playoff team a year ago and returns ten starters, while Eastland and Early welcome new coaches to the fold.

The Mavericks will switch to the flexbone on offense under Matt Landers, while the Longhorns bring in Marvin Wilson to lead a group that returns a lot of talent, led by wide receiver Andrew Reedy.
