TOP FIVE 11-MAN GAMES OF THE WEEK
Brownwood leads series 1-0
Last meeting: Brownwood 55, Ingleside 7 in 2024
At five, it’s a neutral site game between Brownwood and Ingleside. These two met in Boerne last season in a game that the Lions won 55-7, and they’re set to face off at Smithson Valley this time around. The Mustangs, who hail from the Corpus Christi/Port Aransas area of the state, are a 4A Division II team that is 2-3 so far in 2025 and coming off a 54-0 loss to Corpus Christi Ray last week. The Lions are also 2-3 but have a little bit more momentum thanks to a 20-10 homecoming victory over China Spring a week ago. This one may be a little bit closer than the 2024 meeting, but Brownwood is the pick to win it again.
THE SPREAD: Brownwood by 36
THE PICK: Brownwood
Haskell leads series 34-28-2
Last meeting: Seymour 24, Haskell 13 in 2024
Number four is a district matchup between Haskell and Seymour. Both squads lost their district opener last week, making this one as close to a must-win to make the playoffs as you can get at this point of the season. In a tough seven-team District 6-2A Division II, an 0-2 start is just about all it takes to miss the playoffs, so a lot will be on the line as the 2-3 Indians face the 1-4 Panthers. Look for Haskell to snap a two-game skid and earn a big victory to give their playoff hopes a boost. The Indians are the Blitz Pick in this one.

Ruston leads series 1-0
Last meeting: Ruston 63, Stephenville 17
Our third-best game of the week is a matchup of Texas and Louisiana as unbeaten Stephenville will meet unbeaten Ruston, Louisiana, in Longview. Ruston has beaten Longview and Midland Legacy over the past two weeks, both of which are 6A Texas powerhouse programs. The Yellow Jackets fell in this matchup 63-17 last season. I expect this one to be a bit closer, but Ruston, who has six Division I college prospects, is the pick to get the job done.
THE SPREAD: N/A
THE PICK: Ruston
Abilene High leads series 13-11
Last meeting: Abilene 63, Amarillo 42 in 2024
Number two is one of two great games in Abilene this week as Amarillo High visits Abilene High in a key district showdown at Shotwell Stadium. Both teams were victorious in week one of District 2-5A Division One play; the Eagles blew out Caprock 42-7, while the Sandies beat Lubbock Monterey 37-21. The Warbirds won this matchup in a 63-42 shootout on the road a year ago and are five-point favorites to win again. I’m going with Pigskin Prep on this one and picking Abilene High to beat the Sandies Friday night.

Cooper leads series 4-3
Last meeting: Wylie 29, Cooper 7 in 2024
And our top game in Big Country 11-man football this week is Cooper at Wylie in the Southtown Showdown. The Cougars opened district play with a huge win over previously undefeated and previously state-ranked Wichita Falls Memorial last week to raise a few eyebrows across West Texas, while the Bulldogs cruised to a 45-24 victory at Wichita Falls Legacy. The winner in this District 2-5A Division II matchup will be the only 2-0 team in the district after two weeks. This one may go down to the wire, but Wylie is the pick to defend its home field and beat Cooper for the fourth year in a row.
THE SPREAD: Wylie by 2
THE PICK: Wylie
TOP FIVE 6-MAN GAMES OF THE WEEK
Westbrook leads series 8-7
Last meeting: Westbrook 76, Garden City 52 in 2024
The Wildcats fell to Rankin in week three, had a week off to think about it, then blew out Buena Vista 64-16 to improve to 3-1 on the year. Garden City started the season 1-2 but has blasted Irion County and Midland Trinity over the past two weeks 66-20 and 58-0 to get back over .500. Garden City is a traditional Texas six-man powerhouse, but they have struggled the last couple of seasons. They seem to be getting back on track, but Westbrook will be too much and is the pick to win this one.

Robert Lee leads series 50-48-4
Last meeting: Robert Lee 54, Bronte 8 in 2024
Number four is a classic rivalry matchup for Coke County bragging rights as Robert Lee visits Bronte. The Steers enter this one a perfect 5-0 on the season with mercy rule wins in four of their five contests so far. Bronte started the year 3-0 but has lost to Menard and Eden the past two weeks to drop to 3-2. Robert Lee won this battle 54-8 last season and has won three in a row in the series. Look for Brenner Sherwood and company to make it four straight with a win over the Longhorns Friday night.

Rotan leads series 22-13
Last meeting: Aspermont 56, Rotan 8 in 2024
Checking in at number three is Rotan visiting undefeated Aspermont. The Yellow Hammers were off last week and check in at 2-2 on the season, while the Hornets are off to a very hot start to the year. Aspermont shut out Loraine 46-0 last week and has 45’d every team they’ve faced so far this season. Rotan will be the second 1A Division One team that Aspermont will play; they beat Spur 66-16 in week three. The Hammers can hang, but the Hornets are the Blitz Pick to move to 6-0.

Jayton leads series 6-4
Last meeting: Jayton 72, Newcastle 22 in 2024
Number two on the list this week is Jayton at Newcastle. The top-ranked in Division II Jaybirds shut out a very good Division One Hermleigh team last week and now hit the road to face the D-one Bobcats, who are ranked number nine in the state in that division. Newcastle fell at May two weeks ago and was off last week, giving them extended time to prepare for Jayton… but I’m not sure how much it will help. The Jaybirds are the pick to extend their winning streak to 21 in a row.

Benjamin leads series 1-0
Last meeting: Benjamin 106, Cherokee 88 in 2024
And our top Big Country Six-Man matchup this week is Cherokee at Benjamin. These two played a classic defense-is-optional game last year, one that the Mustangs won on the road 106-88 behind a 700-yard, 13-touchdown rushing and passing performance from Keegan Hayes. Benjamin hasn’t played since beating Borden County in a fire-shortened game in week three, so they’ll be more than ready to hit the field. Cherokee has shut out wins the last three weeks and mercy rule wins in all five games so far this season, but the Mustangs are the pick to win this marquee battle of state-ranked squads again
